Electric defrost heaters open circuit and stop producing heat while everything else keeps running. Termination thermostats drift and cut the cycle short before the coil clears. Mechanical timers seize or lose their advance. Drain lines freeze solid, so meltwater backs up and refreezes on the coil, which looks identical to a heater failure until you check.
